Central Market

Central Market is one of those places that always feels like a win with kids, even when we tell ourselves we’re “just popping in quickly”. It looks impressive from the outside, but once you step inside it feels even more alive — busy, colourful and full of things that instantly grab little people’s attention.

One thing we really appreciate as parents is how easy it is to get around. The big open art-deco dome makes it feel airy and surprisingly cool, and the wide walkways mean we’ve even managed to push the pram around without too much stress. Compared to some markets, it feels much less cramped, which makes a huge difference with kids.

There are stalls everywhere selling toys, little trinkets and random bits that kids somehow spot from a mile away — and honestly, we always seem to get roped into buying something. Whether it’s a plastic toy, a light-up thing, or something they absolutely must have in that moment, it’s very much part of the Central Market experience for us now.

It’s also a really gentle way to experience local life in Phnom Penh. You hear friendly chatter, see colourful produce and fabrics, and get a feel for the everyday rhythm of the city without it feeling overwhelming. Letting the kids lead the way for a bit turns it into a mini adventure rather than a task to get through.

There are both indoor and outdoor sections, which makes it easy to dip in and out of the sun. We usually try to go earlier in the morning to avoid the worst of the crowds and heat, and that tends to work best with little ones.

All in all, Central Market is one of those places we keep going back to — just be prepared to leave with an extra toy you hadn’t planned on buying.
