Phnom Chisor

Phnom Chisor felt like a proper little adventure for us, and it’s a great option if you want to get out of the city and do something a bit different with kids.

You’ve got two ways to get to the top: climbing the 400 steps or hopping on a motorbike with security for $1. We chose the bike ride because climbing in the heat with a toddler in tow felt like a bit much for us on that day. The ride itself only takes about 2–3 minutes, but you definitely need to hold on tight — it’s quite bumpy and not exactly a smooth cruise. It’s also worth knowing that they don’t provide helmets, so it’s very much a do-at-your-own-risk situation and something to decide based on what you’re comfortable with as a family.

Once you’re at the top, the views are honestly the highlight. You get wide open countryside views that feel like a complete contrast to Phnom Penh, and it’s a lovely spot to slow down, take photos, and let kids point out things in the distance. It’s one of those places where even toddlers are happy just being up high and looking around.

What surprised us most was the history. There are temples at the top that are actually older than Angkor Wat, which is pretty special. You don’t need to be a history expert to enjoy it either — it’s a gentle, manageable temple experience where kids can wander, explore, and climb around a bit without it feeling overwhelming. There are also lots of fun photo opportunities around the ruins and viewpoints.

If your kids are older or full of energy, climbing the steps up could feel like a real mission and achievement. For us, having the choice made it work — we could still enjoy the experience without pushing anyone past their limit.

Phnom Chisor works really well as a half-day trip. Bring plenty of water, wear comfy shoes, and aim to go earlier in the day if you can, as it does get hot. It’s a simple outing, but one that feels memorable — especially for kids who love being outdoors and exploring somewhere a bit different.
