Silk Island (Koh Dach)

Silk Island is one of our go-to day trips from Phnom Penh when we want to slow everything right down and do something easy with the kids. It’s close enough to feel simple, but once you’re there it really does feel like a proper little escape from the city.

We always hire the same tuk-tuk driver for this trip, which makes the whole day feel relaxed from the start. On the way, he’ll often stop to show us little temples and interesting spots we’d never find on our own — those unplanned stops end up being some of our favourite moments. If you’re looking for a reliable driver, you’ll find his details in our Getting Around with Kids section.

The ferry crossing is half the fun for our kids. It’s short, but they love being on the boat, watching the river and just doing something a bit different. It’s a really nice way to break up the journey and sets the tone for the day.

Once you arrive on Silk Island, everything feels calm and un-rushed. Quiet village roads, open spaces, and plenty of room for kids to explore without constantly needing to hold hands. There are small local temples dotted around, and the silk weaving workshops are genuinely interesting — even for younger kids who just enjoy watching the looms, colours, and movement rather than learning the history.

There are a few simple cafés and places to eat — nothing fancy, but perfect for an easy lunch or a cold drink when everyone needs a break.

Silk Island works brilliantly as a full-day outing, but it’s very flexible. You can explore loads or very little, stop often, and let the day unfold at a toddler-friendly pace. It’s one of our favourite ways to escape Phnom Penh for the day without a long journey — relaxed, family-friendly, and always a lovely change of pace.
